Three Sounds in One Microphone, All Dialed In Without Software

The SM7B ships with two recessed response selector switches on the rear panel. Left switch down gives you bass rolloff, cutting below 400 Hz to pull out room rumble, desk vibration, and low-frequency hum from HVAC. Right switch up gives you mid-range presence boost, adding roughly 3 dB between 2 and 4 kHz for a brighter, forward vocal character that cuts through a mix. Both switches together combines the two. All three variations are genuinely useful and genuinely different, covering everything from warm narration to punchy podcast voice to broadcast news delivery.

The included A7WS close-talk windscreen goes over the standard foam and adds warmth and proximity while reducing plosive energy further for anyone recording lips-to-mic. One Thing to Know Before You Buy: The SM7B Needs Clean Gain

The SM7B has a sensitivity rating of -59 dBV/Pa. That is a low-output dynamic microphone. Shure's own documentation states it requires at least 60 dB of clean gain at the preamp for typical speech applications. Most entry-level and mid-tier audio interfaces top out at 40 to 50 dB of gain, which means you will reach the top of the gain knob and still not have enough level, or worse, you will have enough level but with noise floor riding right alongside it.

There are two clean solutions. A dedicated high-gain preamp handles it at the interface level. An inline microphone booster, like a Cloudlifter, sits between the SM7B and your existing interface and adds up to 25 dB of clean, transparent gain using phantom power, so your preamp never has to work near its noise floor.
