Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator

Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-1 mic activator connected inline between Shure SM7B microphone and XLR preamp cable

Your SM7B, RE20, or Ribbon Was Never the Problem

There's a reason your recordings don't sound like the references, and it's not your room, your mic, or your technique. It's gain structure. The SM7B, the RE20, the Royer 121, some of the most respected microphones ever built, require more clean gain than most interfaces and budget preamps can deliver without straining into their noisiest, most degraded range. The result is a signal that sounds thin, hissy, and nothing like what the mic is actually capable of.

The CL-1 fixes this at the source. Placed inline between your microphone and preamp, it delivers up to +25dB of transparent gain before the signal ever reaches your preamp's input stage. Your preamp now operates comfortably in the middle of its range, where it performs best, and you hear what your microphone actually sounds like rather than what a strained preamp makes it sound like.

The Circuit Behind the Industry Standard

The technology inside the CL-1 is patented for a reason. Where conventional gain circuits route audio through capacitors, resistors, and other components that introduce coloration and distortion, the CL-1's Class-A discrete JFET path eliminates those elements entirely from the signal chain. Two noise-canceling gain stages handle amplification before any capacitors or signal-altering components can touch the audio. By the time the signal reaches those components, it's already strong enough that their negative impact is drastically reduced.

Circuit design: Patented Class-A Discrete JFET, dual noise-canceling gain stages
Maximum gain: Up to +25 dB (with 5kΩ load)
Input impedance: 3kΩ (optimized for dynamic, ribbon, and tube mics)
Recommended load impedance: Greater than 5kΩ
Frequency response: 5 Hz to 80 kHz (-0.3 dB)
Phantom power: +48V required (P48, IEC 61938); no phantom pass-through to mic
Current consumption: 3.1 mA
Connectivity: 3-pin male XLR input / 3-pin female XLR output

The Last Device Your Ribbon Mic Will Ever Need Protection From

Phantom power kills passive ribbon microphones. One accidental hot-plug, one interface with phantom stuck on, and a ribbon element worth hundreds or thousands of dollars is gone. The CL-1 sits between that risk and your microphone. Because it runs on phantom power internally without passing it through to the mic side, your ribbon is completely isolated from phantom at all times, no matter what's happening on the preamp side of the connection. You get the gain you need and the protection you can't afford not to have.

The same applies to passive tube mics, vintage dynamics, battery-powered condensers, and any passive DI output. The CL-1 is a single solution that works across your entire passive microphone collection, including the SM7B and RE20 that get asked the most of any setup. It's also the technology Shure licensed from Cloud Microphones to build the active SM7dB, which is itself a testament to what this circuit can do for a low-output dynamic microphone.

Highlights

  • Up to +25dB of ultra-clean gain for any passive dynamic, ribbon, or tube microphone
  • Patented Class-A discrete JFET circuitry with dual noise-canceling gain stages, free of capacitors and resistors in the audio path
  • Eliminates preamp strain by allowing your interface or preamp to operate in its optimal, low-noise gain range
  • 3kΩ fixed input impedance, optimized for dynamic, ribbon, and tube microphone loading; flat response with preamp loads at or below 3kΩ
  • Requires +48V phantom power (IEC 61938); does not pass phantom to the microphone, providing complete protection for passive ribbon and tube mics
  • Frequency response: 5 Hz to 80 kHz (-0.3 dB)
  • Current consumption: 3.1 mA
  • Compatible with passive dynamic, ribbon, tube, battery-powered, and power-supply-driven microphones; passive DI outputs; wireless mic receiver outputs
  • Industry standard gain solution, with Cloud's patented technology licensed to Shure for use in the active SM7dB
  • Drives stronger, cleaner signals over long XLR cable runs, ideal for broadcast and live stage applications
  • Rugged solid steel chassis with provisions for mic stand or stage mounting
  • Dimensions: 1.93" x 1.93" x 4.72" / Weight: 11.3 oz (320.3 g)
  • Handcrafted in the USA (Navajo Nation and Tucson, Arizona)
  • Limited lifetime warranty with registration

  • Please note: While most items ship out within 1–2 business days, total delivery time is typically 3–5 business days, depending on your location and carrier handling.

Order Shipment

If your item is in stock and your payment has been processed, your order will typically ship within 1–2 business days. Total delivery time is approximately 3–5 business days from the date of order. Once shipped, you will receive tracking information at the email address provided during checkout within 24 hours of dispatch.

If you have not received tracking information within 3–5 business days of placing your order, please contact us at support@proaudioreserve.com.

The Distributor-Direct Advantage

To ensure you receive the most recent hardware revisions and 100% factory-sealed units, Pro Audio Reserve utilizes a Distributor-Direct fulfillment model. Unlike big-box retailers that may ship "floor models" or gear that has been sitting in general-purpose warehouses, your equipment is pulled directly from the primary manufacturer hub, serialized, and dispatched. This process ensures the highest level of quality control for professional-grade recording equipment.

Shipping Policy

We currently offer free shipping within the United States only. If the checkout process on our website allows you to enter a shipping address and complete your order, your location is eligible to receive delivery.

Changing Shipping Address

If you need to change your shipping address after your order has been processed or shipped, we will do our best to accommodate the request. Please note that address changes may result in delivery delays. Any additional costs incurred due to address changes, including carrier fees or rerouting charges will be the responsibility of the customer. No exceptions.

Shipping Times

All shipping times provided are estimates and should not be considered guarantees. Most orders ship out within 1–2 business days from the time payment is processed. However, total delivery time is typically 3–5 business days, depending on your location, carrier performance, and supplier fulfillment timelines.

We work closely with our vendors to ensure timely deliveries, but please note that supply chain disruptions, high-demand periods, or weather events may occasionally cause delays beyond our control.

  • To avoid misunderstandings: The “shipping time” refers to the total time from order placement to final delivery, not just when the item leaves the warehouse.

  • Cancellations: If you choose to cancel your order because it has not arrived within the estimated delivery window, you may be responsible for applicable shipping charges, restocking fees, warehouse handling costs, and other related fees.

  • Chargebacks: Customers who initiate chargebacks due to shipping delays without contacting us first may be held legally responsible for losses. We strongly encourage open communication so we can resolve any delivery concerns directly and efficiently via our Atlanta-based support team.

Delivery Options

  • Threshold Shipping: Your item will be delivered to your front door, porch, garage, or a covered entryway.
