Cloudlifter CL-X Overview

Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-X transformer mic activator showing custom CineMag transformer chassis with gain switch and Neutrik Gold XLR connectors

Clean Gain Is One Thing. Transformer Gain Is Something Else Entirely.

Every large-format recording console ever built around a transformer input stage has something in common: the signal getting onto tape, or into the converter, carried the transformer's character with it. That weight in the low mids. That compression on transient peaks. That subtle harmonic density that makes a recorded vocal feel like it's sitting inside the track rather than floating on top of it. That character isn't incidental. It's why engineers still pay five figures for vintage API and Neve channel strips when modern equivalents measure better on paper.

The CL-X puts a custom-wound CineMag transformer directly in the signal path between your microphone and preamp. Combined with the same patented Class-A discrete JFET circuitry that powers every Cloudlifter, it delivers up to +36dB of gain while letting the transformer itself respond dynamically to signal level: the harder you drive it, the more character it adds. At lower levels it stays composed and present. As the signal gets louder, harmonics develop, transients round just slightly, and the recording picks up a texture that no amount of plugin processing can fully replicate.

Two Gain Positions. Two Different Tools.

The CL-X's gain switch isn't just an attenuation control. Each position puts the transformer into a fundamentally different operating state:

MAX (+36dB): Full gain for low-output passive microphones. Whisper-quiet sources, distant room captures, delicate acoustic instruments, and ASMR content all benefit from the headroom here. The transformer is running conservatively relative to signal level, contributing subtle warmth and density without audible saturation. This is the default position for any passive dynamic or ribbon that needs the full gain recovery the CL-X offers
MORE (+12dB): Designed for louder sources such as close-miked amplifiers, snare drums, brass, and any situation where the microphone is already seeing significant SPL. At +12dB the transformer is being hit harder relative to the circuit's output, which pulls more harmonic complexity into the signal. The compression behavior becomes more audible, transients take on a rounded character, and the recording develops the kind of density that producers refer to as "console sound." This is where the CL-X stops behaving like a utility device and starts functioning as a genuine tone shaping tool

One Box Between Your Microphone and Everything That's Missing

Consider what most independent producers and vocalists are actually working with: a capable interface, a quality microphone, and a DAW full of plugins trying to add back the analog character that was never in the signal chain to begin with. Plugins that emulate transformer saturation, tape compression, and console coloration are doing their best to reconstruct something that was never captured in the first place. The CL-X resolves this at the source. The transformer character is in the recording from the moment the signal leaves the microphone, which means it behaves like real analog hardware throughout the mix rather than like a static effect applied on top.

The Neutrik Gold XLR connectors on both input and output handle the connection reliably across thousands of insertions. The solid steel chassis sits on a desktop or patches into a live rack with equal stability. And because the CL-X runs entirely on +48V phantom from the downstream preamp or interface, there are no batteries, no external power supplies, and no additional cables in the setup. Plug it in. Set the gain. Record.

Highlights

  • Custom CineMag mic input transformer, wound specifically for the CL-X, providing dynamically responsive harmonic saturation that increases with signal level
  • Up to +36dB of gain (MAX position) for passive dynamic, ribbon, and tube microphones; +12dB (MORE position) for louder sources and maximum transformer drive
  • Patented Class-A discrete JFET circuitry with dual noise-canceling gain stages; same core circuit as CL-1, with transformer character added upstream
  • 3kΩ optimal impedance loading, ideal for dynamic, ribbon, and tube microphones
  • Transformer character is dynamically responsive: subtle warmth and density at lower signal levels, progressive harmonic saturation and transient rounding as source level increases
  • Frequency response: 5 Hz to 80 kHz (-0.3 dB)
  • Recommended load impedance: greater than 5kΩ
  • Neutrik Gold XLR connectors on both input (male) and output (female) for reliable, long-cycle connectivity
  • Requires +48V phantom power (P48, IEC 61938); does not pass phantom to the microphone, safe for all passive ribbon and tube mics
  • Current consumption: 3.1 mA
  • Compatible with passive dynamic, ribbon, tube, battery-powered, and power-supply-driven microphones
  • Rugged solid steel chassis, rubber feet, underside metal bridge for strap or velcro mounting in live environments
  • Dimensions: 5.35" x 3.43" x 2.6" / Weight: 17.3 oz
  • Handcrafted in Tucson, Arizona, USA
  • Limited lifetime warranty with registration

Shipping & Returns

  • We deliver all US orders in 3–5 business days
  • Free cancellations
  • Returns accepted within 30 days (unused items)

Order Confirmation

Once your order is placed, you will receive an order confirmation email. This confirms that we have received your order and have pre-authorized your credit card for the purchase. After confirming availability with our suppliers, we will proceed accordingly:

  • If your item is available and ready to ship within 1–2 business days, we will process the charge and arrange for shipment.

  • If your item is on backorder or unavailable, the pre-authorization will be voided and you will be notified by email.

  • Please note: While most items ship out within 1–2 business days, total delivery time is typically 3–5 business days, depending on your location and carrier handling.

Order Shipment

If your item is in stock and your payment has been processed, your order will typically ship within 1–2 business days. Total delivery time is approximately 3–5 business days from the date of order. Once shipped, you will receive tracking information at the email address provided during checkout within 24 hours of dispatch.

If you have not received tracking information within 3–5 business days of placing your order, please contact us at support@proaudioreserve.com.

The Distributor-Direct Advantage

To ensure you receive the most recent hardware revisions and 100% factory-sealed units, Pro Audio Reserve utilizes a Distributor-Direct fulfillment model. Unlike big-box retailers that may ship "floor models" or gear that has been sitting in general-purpose warehouses, your equipment is pulled directly from the primary manufacturer hub, serialized, and dispatched. This process ensures the highest level of quality control for professional-grade recording equipment.

Shipping Policy

We currently offer free shipping within the United States only. If the checkout process on our website allows you to enter a shipping address and complete your order, your location is eligible to receive delivery.

Changing Shipping Address

If you need to change your shipping address after your order has been processed or shipped, we will do our best to accommodate the request. Please note that address changes may result in delivery delays. Any additional costs incurred due to address changes, including carrier fees or rerouting charges will be the responsibility of the customer. No exceptions.

Shipping Times

All shipping times provided are estimates and should not be considered guarantees. Most orders ship out within 1–2 business days from the time payment is processed. However, total delivery time is typically 3–5 business days, depending on your location, carrier performance, and supplier fulfillment timelines.

We work closely with our vendors to ensure timely deliveries, but please note that supply chain disruptions, high-demand periods, or weather events may occasionally cause delays beyond our control.

  • To avoid misunderstandings: The “shipping time” refers to the total time from order placement to final delivery, not just when the item leaves the warehouse.

  • Cancellations: If you choose to cancel your order because it has not arrived within the estimated delivery window, you may be responsible for applicable shipping charges, restocking fees, warehouse handling costs, and other related fees.

  • Chargebacks: Customers who initiate chargebacks due to shipping delays without contacting us first may be held legally responsible for losses. We strongly encourage open communication so we can resolve any delivery concerns directly and efficiently via our Atlanta-based support team.

Delivery Options

  • Threshold Shipping: Your item will be delivered to your front door, porch, garage, or a covered entryway.
