The name JRS-34 carries a specific weight. Jon R. Sank spent his career at RCA designing the ribbon microphones that shaped the sound of American recording: the 44, the BK-11A, the instruments that engineers spent the rest of the 20th century hunting for on the vintage market. His son, Stephen Sank, grew up inside that world. When Rodger Cloud set out to build a ribbon microphone in 2006 after years of refurbishing vintage units, Stephen Sank was the collaborator he needed. The JRS-34 is their shared answer to what a new ribbon microphone built on that foundation should actually sound like.

The result is not a replica and not an homage. It is a working professional instrument that draws directly on RCA's engineering principles while improving on them in every measurable dimension. Each ribbon element is cut, corrugated, and installed by hand, exactly as prescribed by Harry Olson's original RCA method, and then refined with a custom CineMag transformer, patented rounded magnet geometry, and an internal spring-suspension system that protects the element from handling shock without anchoring it in ways that compromise its acoustic integrity.

The 1.8-Micron Ribbon That Defines the Sound

At 1.8 microns thick and 0.19" wide across a 2.35" length, the JRS-34's ribbon element sits at the edge of what is physically achievable in ribbon fabrication. This is where the character comes from. A ribbon this thin responds to air pressure with a speed and delicacy that condenser capsules, with all their electrical precision, cannot replicate. Transients arrive naturally softened at the leading edge, not by EQ or limiting, but by the physics of a thin metal foil moving through a magnetic field. Brass loses its harshest bite. Strings gain body without losing articulation. Voices land with a presence and weight that feels analog in every sense of the word.

Passive Purity or Active Headroom: Choose Your Configuration

The JRS-34 is offered in passive form, which is a deliberate choice for engineers who understand impedance loading and want full control over it. When a passive ribbon sees different preamp input impedances, the frequency response, transient character, and tonal weight of the mic shift perceptibly. That variation is a feature. Paired with a transformer-coupled preamp running at low-to-moderate gain, the JRS-34 passive responds with the kind of thick, unhurried low midrange that engineers spend thousands chasing in vintage units. Paired with a higher-impedance input, it opens up, breathes more freely, and loses some of that classic warmth in exchange for detail and extension.

For setups where that control isn't the goal, or where the preamp gain structure makes passive ribbon operation impractical, a Cloudlifter inline will restore full headroom and effectively replicate what the active circuit version delivers: an isolated 3kΩ input impedance that removes preamp variability from the equation and adds up to +25dB of clean gain before the signal ever reaches the interface.
